Choices and Consequences
Choosing Hadvar or Ralof changes your route through Helgen Keep and who helps you in Riverwood, but it does not lock you into either side of the Civil War.
Follow Hadvar
Escape through Helgen Keep with Hadvar, fighting Stormcloak soldiers along the way. After leaving Helgen, he directs you to his uncle Alvor in Riverwood. This choice does not commit you to the Imperial Legion.
Follow Ralof
Escape through Helgen Keep with Ralof, fighting Imperial soldiers along the way. After leaving Helgen, he directs you to his sister Gerdur in Riverwood. This choice does not commit you to the Stormcloaks.
